Eli emerged from his burrow, blinking in the sunlight, and gave a brief speech. The audience was surprised when they realized that the speech was first given in 2007, during the final years of the reign of King Dubya.

Eli's press secretary proclaimed that the learned bunny did not see his shadow. Hence another 6 weeks of winter are forecast.

Oh, wait. I'm thinking of Eli's distant cousin, Pucks A. Tawny Fill. While Eli is working long hours in the laboratory, Pucks is grabbing the headlines and holding press conferences.

Pucks predicts the weather. Eli predicts the climate.

You need more than one year's worth of Superbowl Sales to determine a trend, and more than one geographic location for data points.

I can assure you, it's much the same where I live this year.

Environmental journalist Mark Hertsgaard discusses his new book, "Hot: Living Through the Next Fifty Years." Writing from the perspective of a father, Hertsgaard outlines the changes he foresees happening in the global environment over the next fifty years, emphasizing how his 5-year-old daughter's generation will have to contend with the disruptions of climate change.

Hertsgaard makes the excellent point that except for the US Republican party, no political group in the world still denies climate change. It's a tiny minority of a minority.
With big money and megaphones.

Hank, it's unfortunately not true. In the Netherlands there is the PVV, in Denmark the DF, who deny climate is changing (and if it is, it most assuredly is not due to our emissions). In the UK the UKIP does so (does the name Monckton ring a bell?). I'm sure others elsewhere can supplement.

The Republican Party is, however, to my knowledge the only political party that denies climate change and has a majority in "parliament".

Regardless of all that, it's not like those politicians in power who 'believe' in climate change, of the man-made kind, are doing that much about it...

Hank Roberts said...

Marco, that's right, I should've been clearer -- he said no other governing party is delaying or denying action on climate change, and he listed quite a few quite conservative parties actively engaged with planning for climate change.

After all, true conservatives want to keep things as they are.

Don't call the US Republicans in the US Congress conservatives.
They are Mad Hatters.
